About After Ike

A century after the 1919 Transcontinental Military Convoy battled its way across 3,251 miles of the Lincoln Highway, "After Ike" retraces that grueling expedition—an undertaking that tested endurance, engineering, and national resolve.

Over 62 arduous days, soldiers, mechanics, and officers confronted mud, mechanical failure, collapsing bridges, and primitive roads. Among them was a young Dwight D. Eisenhower, whose experience on the convoy would later influence his vision for the Interstate Highway System, reshaping the United States' physical and economic connectivity for generations to come.

As the United States approaches its semiquincentennial, the story of the 1919 convoy feels more relevant than ever. It is a story about infrastructure before infrastructure existed, about national ambition before the nation was physically connected, and about how one difficult journey helped inspire the roads that would unite a continent.
